SP leader Abu AzmiA day after Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said boys commit mistakes, but should not hang for rape, his party's Maharashtra chief has given a new twist to the controversy.
Agreeing with his party's supremo, Azmi said, "...Any woman if, whether married or unmarried, goes along with a man, with or without her consent, should be hanged. Both should be hanged."
Replying to a question on Yadav's remark, the former Rajya Sabha member and sitting MLA told Mid-Day: "Rape is punishable by hanging in Islam. But here, nothing happens to women, only to men. Even the woman is guilty." Boys make mistakes, should not hang: Mulayam on rape
"In India, if you have sex with a person with consent, it's fine. But if that same person complains, it's a problem. Nowadays, we see a lot of such cases. Girls complain when someone touches them, and even when someone doesn't touch them. It becomes a problem then, and the man's honour is ruined in this. If rape happens with or without consent, it should be punished as prescribed in Islam," Azmi added.
National Commission for Women issued a notice to the state SP chief for his insensitive remarks.
Azmi's remarks, however, did not find favour with his son and SP's Lok Sabha candidate from Mumbai North Central constituency, Farhan Azmi, who disagreed with his father and advocated death penalty for rapists.
Speaking at a public meeting in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, Yadav had said, "Boys make mistakes. They should not hang for this. We will revoke the anti-rape laws."
Putting forward his own explanation for a spurt in rape cases among youngsters, the SP supremo had said, "Boys and girls befriend each other. When they fall out, a rape complaint is lodged. We will change this law and will make a provision for penalising people who misuse the law by filing frivolous complaints."
Yadav's comment drew strong reactions from political leaders as well as on the social networking sites.
